The Experience
We landed right in the middle of Barcelona’s old city, and honestly, my kids were already distracted by the flower stalls along La Rambla before our guide Marta even said hello. She had this easy way of talking to them—like she actually wanted to hear their answers, not just keep them moving. We wandered past Güell Palace (the ironwork is wild up close), but the real highlight for my daughter was chasing pigeons in Plaça del Rei while Marta told us about kings and queens who’d walked there centuries ago. I tried to repeat one of the Catalan words she taught us—“plaça”—and got it so wrong that even a street musician nearby started laughing.
The Boqueria Market was a blur of colors and smells—ham hanging everywhere, fruit piled high, people calling out orders. My son got a sticky cone of jamón (I snuck a bite; salty, silky) while he eyed the playground just outside. There was this moment when we sat on a bench: adults nibbling ham, kids shrieking over some game Marta had whipped out of her bag. The air smelled like oranges and something sweet from a bakery nearby. It felt like we’d slipped into someone else’s Saturday routine.
I didn’t expect the churros stop to be such a big deal, but wow—the hot chocolate was almost too thick to drink, more like warm pudding than anything I’ve had at home. My youngest ended up with chocolate on his nose and didn’t care at all. We strolled through El Born after that (the ruins inside the market are strange and beautiful), then into Ciutadella Park where ducks paddled around little lakes and families lounged on grass that still felt cool even in the sun. Marta handed out tiny prizes for some scavenger hunt she’d set up—I still have one of those plastic tokens in my pocket.
The whole day was this mix of old stones and new games, stories layered over playground noise. Barcelona felt less like a postcard and more like somewhere you could actually belong for an afternoon. I keep thinking about that last bit in the park—how quiet it got for a second as we watched the ducks—and how none of us wanted to rush off anywhere else.
