The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed on an e-bike weaving through Barcelona’s narrow lanes — I’m usually a bit nervous in city traffic, but our guide Marta just laughed and said, “Don’t worry, you’ll see how easy it is.” She was right. We started from this little shop on Carrer d'Enric Granados (they let you pick your own bike — mine had a basket with sunflowers). The seat was adjusted for me and Marta explained the pedal-assist thing in about two minutes. Honestly, I still don’t really get how the Bosch motor works but it felt like having a gentle push up every hill.

The city feels different when you’re gliding instead of walking. We zipped past modern glass buildings that looked almost too clean for Barcelona, then ducked into these shady backstreets where laundry flapped above us and someone somewhere was frying onions — that smell followed us for blocks. At one point we stopped in a tiny square where an old man was playing chess alone. Marta told us about the history of the neighborhood (I forgot half of it but I remember her saying Gaudí used to walk here). The group was small — just seven of us — so it felt more like friends than a tour.

Halfway through we parked at an outdoor café near the beach. The coffee wasn’t fancy but sitting there with salty air and sand stuck to my ankles felt like a real break from sightseeing. Someone tried to order in Catalan and got corrected by the waiter (with a grin). After that we rode along the waterfront — sun on our backs, kids playing football nearby — and I realized I hadn’t checked my phone once. The e-bikes made everything feel lighter somehow.
