The experience

You arrive with a free afternoon and no vehicle. The safari departs at 1 p.m. from one of four gates (Paul Kruger, Phabeni, Numbi or Malelane), so you choose the one closest to where you are staying. The guide meets you there and introduces the park's layout and the day's activity: fresh tracks, recent sightings, which animals move where and why. The Southern section (Skukuza and Pretoriouskop areas) is where the afternoon light works best and where the animals tend to gather as the day cools.

The vehicle is open-sided, which means you see without glass and hear the bush as it is. Five to six hours means you cover real ground without rushing. The guide stops when something is worth watching: a herd moving across a ridge, a bird call that signals something larger nearby, the way light changes on the water. You carry binoculars and a camera. The guide carries the knowledge of what to look for and where. Bottled water is on board. Blankets and rain ponchos travel with you in case the afternoon brings a thundershower. A comfort break happens at one of the camps partway through.

The return happens by 5:30 or 6 p.m. depending on the season. Early enough that you're back before dark, late enough that you've seen the light change. You leave with a personal sightings journal, which is a record of what you actually saw, not a generic checklist. The guide does not chase the animals. The style is about reading the landscape and letting the day unfold. Elephant, buffalo, hippo and giraffe are reliable; zebra and antelope are constant; lion and leopard are possible but never promised.

Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 11 years). Under 6: they can't be included in the booking.

What animals am I likely to see on an afternoon safari in Kruger?

Elephant, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, zebra and a variety of antelope are reliably present in the Southern section. Lion and leopard are possible depending on the day's activity and the guide's reading of recent tracks and sightings.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the gate, or is pickup included?

Pickup is included from Paul Kruger, Phabeni, Numbi or Malelane gate. You choose the gate closest to where you're staying and meet the guide there at 1 p.m.

How long is the afternoon safari, and what time does it finish?

The safari runs 5 to 6 hours, departing at 1 p.m. and returning to the gate between 5:30 and 6 p.m. depending on the season.

What should I bring for a Kruger afternoon safari?

Bring a camera, binoculars, a hat, sunglasses and comfortable shoes. In summer months (September to April), wear cool, dull-colored clothing and sunscreen. In winter (May to August), bring a jacket and long pants as the open vehicle amplifies the cold in early evening. Blankets and rain ponchos are provided on the vehicle.
