If you're arriving in the Underberg area or have a couple of days free, this tour solves the problem of experiencing Lesotho as more than a quick border run. Most visitors spend a few hours at Sani Pass and turn around; this one keeps you in the mountains overnight, which changes what you see and who you meet. You start in Underberg, climb into a specially equipped 4×4, and follow the Sani Valley through the UNESCO-listed uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park toward the legendary pass. The road climbs through dramatic cliffs and switchbacks—South Africa's highest mountain pass—and once you cross into Lesotho, you stop for lunch at Sani Mountain Lodge, where the Highest Pub in Africa sits (subject to availability). The journey continues to Black Mountain Pass, another of the highest drivable points in Southern Africa, with views toward Thabana Ntlenyana, before you reach a traditional Basotho village to learn about local customs and daily life in the highlands.

You spend the night at Mantsebo Guest House in the heart of the highlands, waking to mountain air and panoramic views. On day two, you choose between two experiences: a guided hike through the high-altitude landscapes or a horseback adventure on the sure-footed Basotho ponies that have carried people through these mountains for generations. Both options take the morning and give you a different angle on the same terrain. After your activity, you return to Sani Top for lunch, then begin the descent of Sani Pass, completing border formalities and absorbing the Southern Drakensberg one last time before arriving back in Underberg in the afternoon.
