The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous about the Sani Pass day trip from Underberg. You hear stories about those switchbacks and the altitude, but sitting in the back of that 4x4—windows rattling, mist curling over the cliffs—I felt more awake than I had in months. Our guide, Jabulani, kept pointing out birds I’d never even noticed before (a bearded vulture?!) and somehow made border control feel like part of the adventure. The air changed up there—colder, thinner, kind of sweet with grass and woodsmoke.

Lunch at the “Highest Pub in Africa” is one of those things you tell your friends about later but can’t quite explain—the way everyone laughs a little too loudly because we’re all strangers sharing soup while clouds drift past the window. I tried the Maluti beer (not bad), and Li laughed when I tried to say “Khotso” in Sesotho—definitely butchered it. The view from up there is wild; honestly, I still think about it sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.

After that we bumped along to Skeering, a Basotho village that felt both close and far away from everything familiar. There was homemade bread—warm, slightly sour—and kids waving from doorways. Our guide translated as an elder explained how winters get so cold here they sleep with stones heated by fire. It’s not polished or staged; just people living their lives on top of this mountain. The drive down felt quieter somehow. Maybe it was just me thinking about how small my usual world is compared to these wide valleys.
