Step-by-step itinerary
Port Elizabeth Coastal Highlights
- Walk on Shark Rock Pier
- Visit SANCCOB Penguin Rehabilitation Centre
- Drive along coastline to Sacramento Monument
- Visit Cape Recife Lighthouse
- Explore Sardinia Bay Beach and sand dunes
- Return via Port Elizabeth residential areas
The experience
The tour starts at Shark Rock Pier, a working pier next to Hobie Beach where locals swim. From there you move to SANCCOB, the penguin rehabilitation centre, where a guided walk lets you see African penguins, a critically endangered species, and other marine birds up close. The centre's staff explain the animals and the conservation work happening there, so you understand what you're looking at instead of just watching through glass.
After SANCCOB, the route follows the coastline to Cape Recife Lighthouse, the third oldest operating lighthouse in South Africa, positioned on the southernmost tip of Port Elizabeth on one of the region's best private beaches. You'll stop at Sacramento Monument to hear the history of the old cannon and take in the views from there. Port Elizabeth is known as the bottlenose dolphin capital of the world, so dolphins are a possibility depending on the day. The tour then heads inland briefly before reaching Sardinia Bay Beach, where the sand dunes and expansive shoreline are the main draw. On the return, you pass through Port Elizabeth's residential areas before being dropped at your hotel or cruise ship terminal.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and the guide speaks English throughout. The pace is built around a half-day window, so the five stops fit without rushing, though climbing to the top of the Cape Recife Lighthouse is optional and weather-dependent.
