Step-by-step itinerary
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park Safari Experience
- Drive to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park
- Search for Big 5 and other wildlife
- Explore landscape and learn about eco-systems
- Learn about rhino conservation and plants
The experience
The day begins with pickup from your hotel and a drive to Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, one of South Africa's oldest game reserves. Once inside, you spend the morning and afternoon searching for the Big 5 (elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos and buffalo), plus cheetahs, wild dogs, zebra, kudu and vultures. The guide points out what to watch for and explains the landscape, the animals' behavior and the park's work to bring the rhino population back from near extinction.
Children get a children's activity pack to work through during the drive and quieter moments, keeping them occupied between wildlife sightings. Meals are child-friendly: burgers, chicken skewers, pasta and sandwiches, served alongside fruit, yogurt, juice boxes and hot drinks. Bottled water and snacks come throughout the day. If you're traveling with an infant, specialized car seats are available.
The tour runs 8 to 9 hours total. An early start is built into the schedule because animals are most active in the cooler morning hours, so you'll see more in the first few hours than you would on an afternoon-only trip. Private transportation means the vehicle can stop when the guide spots something worth watching, and there's no waiting for a group to board or disembark.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 12 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What animals will we actually see in Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park?
The Big 5 (elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos and buffalo) live in the park year-round, along with cheetahs, wild dogs, zebra, kudu and vultures. Sightings depend on where the animals are on the day you visit, so the guide uses experience and radio contact with other rangers to find them, but there's no guarantee of seeing every species in a single day.
Why do we need to start so early?
Animals are most active in the cooler morning hours, so an early start means you'll see more wildlife in the first few hours than you would if you arrived mid-morning or afternoon. The early departure also lets the guide cover more ground while conditions favor sightings.
Do we need to be fit or experienced to do this tour?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. You spend most of the day in the vehicle, so there's no hiking or strenuous walking required.
