The experience

The ride covers gentle terrain through the valley floor, starting from a meeting point 3km from Franschhoek village. You'll pedal past vineyards and follow trails beside the Franschhoek River, with the Wemmershoek Mountains as a backdrop. The guide leads you through three stops: Rickety Bridge Wine Estate, which overlooks the valley from a hillside position; La Bri, one of the oldest Huguenot-allocated farms in the region; and a third estate spread across 47 acres with views toward the rugged mountains beyond. At each stop you taste wines and learn the history of the properties: La Bri's connection to 17th-century Huguenot settlement is woven into the valley's identity.

You'll ride on a mountain bike with helmet included. EBike upgrades are available to book in advance if you prefer electric assist, though these are subject to availability and cost extra. A snack pack with bottled water, chocolate and nuts sustains you between stops. Lunch happens at one of the estates and is on your own account. You order and pay separately. The guide speaks English and sets a leisurely pace suited to moderate fitness. The six-hour duration includes riding time, tastings and the lunch break.

The tour requires a minimum of two people to run. Single travelers can enquire about joining a prebooked group. You need to be at least 16 years old and have moderate physical fitness. The cycling is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or during pregnancy. Public transport options exist near the starting point if you're staying in the village without a car.
