The experience
You arrive at the launch site in the Cradle of Humankind or Magaliesberg, whichever region suits your lodge, and watch the balloon inflate on the ground. The pilot walks you through what happens next: a gentle ascent, the basket rising as the air heats, then the moment the tether releases and you're floating. The flight lasts roughly an hour, and the pilot controls the altitude throughout, bringing you down to drift past treetops one moment and climbing to take in the full sweep of the African landscape the next. There's no engine noise, no sudden movements. Just the occasional roar of the burner and the view expanding below.
Once you land, a five-star lodge hosts the traditional champagne breakfast. Sparkling wine and orange juice mark the flight, keeping with balloon-flight custom, and you'll have tea and coffee alongside a full buffet. The pilot presents you with a certificate before the day ends. The entire outing (arrival, inflation, flight, landing and breakfast) takes about three hours. Flat shoes are essential, and you'll need to stand for the duration of the flight and be able to step in and out of the basket on your own.
Flights run all year, though weather can force a reschedule or refund. The operator has launch sites near most lodges in both regions, or will arrange a launch from your own accommodation if space allows. A live English-speaking pilot is with you throughout.
