The Experience

Someone’s waving from across the street — turns out it’s our guide, Zola, already chatting with a couple of shop owners outside a café in Woodstock. The air smells like fresh paint and coffee (not kidding), and you can hear taxis honking somewhere behind us. We set off down Albert Road, Zola pointing out a mural I’d never noticed before — a woman with bright yellow hair, her eyes almost following you. “She’s based on my aunt,” he laughs. I ask if she knows about it. He just grins.

I didn’t expect to feel so much energy from painted walls, but there’s something about seeing these huge murals up close — you notice chipped corners, little handprints near the bottom where kids must’ve touched them.
