You’ll ride a 4x4 into Table Mountain’s foothills before zipping across seven wild cables above Cape Town’s canyons. Local guides keep things light (and safe), while you catch your breath between bursts of speed and fynbos scents. It’s fast, funny, sometimes nerve-wracking—and leaves you buzzing long after you’re done.
“Don’t look down unless you want to see your breakfast again,” our guide Junaid grinned as he tightened my harness at the first platform. He’d been doing this for years, but still had that spark in his eye — the kind of guy who knows every bend of Table Mountain’s foothills and probably half the birds by sound. The 4x4 up from the meeting point was already a jolt (literally — I smacked my knee on the seat), but nothing compared to standing there with the city spread out below and that first cable humming in the wind.
I didn’t expect how fresh everything would smell — like sun-warmed fynbos, almost lemony. We zipped between platforms, seven cables in all, some so long I lost sight of the next station until halfway across. There was a moment on cable four where I just let go (not literally) and listened to nothing but the wind and my own weird laugh echoing off the canyon walls. Junaid pointed out a dassie sunning itself on a rock; apparently they’re related to elephants? Still not sure if he was messing with us.
The walk between lines gave my heart a chance to calm down. Dusty paths, little purple flowers poking through cracks, everyone’s voices bouncing around — it felt like we were all in on some secret above Cape Town. The highest cable is 155 meters up. I tried not to think about that until I was actually flying over it. My hands shook after landing but in a good way, like after a cold swim or something you know you’ll remember later.
