The experience

The Spirit of Victoria is a red-brown-sailed gaff-rigged schooner built to carry 45 passengers, and she leaves from the historic Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Once you're aboard, the boat motors out of the harbour and across Table Bay, heading toward Milnerton lighthouse before turning back into the protection of Granger Bay. The whole arc takes 90 minutes, and the timing catches the light when Table Mountain and the city skyline sit behind you as the sun moves lower.

The bar aboard serves sparkling wine, beer and cold drinks throughout the sail. You get two glasses of sparkling wine included in the ticket. Anything beyond that you order separately. The laid-back pace means you can stand on deck for photographs, move around the boat, or settle into a spot and watch the water and the mountain. Children from age 4 can come along (they'll get non-alcoholic drinks if they're under 18), and infants can ride in a pram or stroller if you bring one.

The boat is easily spotted in the bay by her distinctive red-brown sails, and the experience is built around the sail itself rather than a guided tour of specific sites. You're on the water for the views, the light and the motion of the boat, not narrated stops.
