The experience
Van Zyl's Hall is the centerpiece: a cave chamber 107 meters long, 54 meters wide and up to 17 meters high, reached by descending a flight of stairs from the entrance. Inside, you'll see named formations (Cleopatra's Needle, a 10-meter spike estimated at 150,000 years old; the Organ Pipes; the Ballerina; the Frozen Waterfall) each one a different mineral deposit shaped over millennia. The caves lie 30 kilometers outside Oudtshoorn and are one of the Seven Wonders of South Africa, an archaeological and historical landmark of the Klein Karoo region.
After the caves, the tour moves to Safari Ostrich Farm, 6 kilometers outside town. This is the only tractor tour on an ostrich farm in South Africa. You'll spend an hour on the working farm in a guided encounter with the birds: learning about the world's largest living bird species and handling them up close. The tractor keeps you at a safe distance while letting you interact directly, a setup no other ostrich farm in the country offers.
Lunch happens in Oudtshoorn at a local restaurant where you can sample ostrich meat as part of a Karoo plate, or choose Karoo lamb, with vegan and vegetarian options available. Bottled water is provided throughout the day. The tour runs about 5.5 hours total, with travel time between sites separate from the time spent at each activity. An air-conditioned vehicle and a live guide in English or Dutch are included in every booking.
