The Experience

“Ring it three times for luck,” our guide Maja grinned, handing me the rope inside that little church on Bled Island. I hesitated — not sure if I believed in bells or wishes — but everyone else was already laughing at their own attempts, so I gave it a go. The echo bounced off old stone and water, and for a second, it felt like the whole lake paused. We’d rowed out across Lake Bled just after the morning mist lifted, hands cold on the oars and cheeks stinging in the breeze. There’s something about seeing that castle perched above you from water level — makes you feel small in a good way.

I didn’t expect to care much about dessert at 10am, but Maja insisted we try kremšnita by the shore (“it’s practically law here”). Flaky pastry dusted my jacket; custard sweet and cool against my tongue. The air smelled faintly of woodsmoke from somewhere upwind. After that, we wound through Radovna Valley in the van — eight of us, swapping seats and stories while mountains pressed close on both sides. It’s wild up there: cliffs streaked with green moss, rivers so clear you see every pebble. Sometimes we’d stop just to listen to nothing but water and wind.

Kranjska Gora surprised me — I thought it’d be sleepy, but there were kids racing each other near Lake Jasna and an old man feeding ducks who winked when he caught me watching. The Julian Alps looked painted on behind them; snow still clinging to the tops even though it was warm enough down below for short sleeves. Maja pointed out where she learned to ski as a kid (she said she still falls sometimes). We walked along the wooden pier until someone spotted that bronze ibex statue — apparently everyone takes photos with it, so we did too, feeling a bit silly but happy anyway.

The last stop was Zelenci Springs. It’s quieter there; even our group fell into this hush as we walked out over the boardwalks above those unreal turquoise pools. You can see straight down into another world under your feet — tiny bubbles rising from somewhere deep and ancient. I still think about that color when I close my eyes at night. On the way back to Ljubljana, nobody talked much; just watched light flicker through trees until city sounds crept back in.
