The experience

Five hours gives you the lake and the castle without the day disappearing into travel. You're picked up from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and driven to the point where the Pletna boats depart. These wooden boats are made by locals and exist nowhere else. They're the only way to reach the Church of the Assumption on the island. The boat ride itself is the core of the morning. You'll have time on the island to walk around and take in the views before heading back across the water.

From the lake, the tour moves to the castle. The route climbs to the top of the rock face, 130 metres high, where Bled Castle sits. The castle is Slovenia's oldest and holds a museum collection that traces the region's history, including the oldest printing press from medieval times. The views from up there span the island, the town of Bled, and the wider countryside toward the Alps. Your guide walks you through the castle and its grounds, then the vehicle returns you to your hotel.
