The Experience
The day starts with pickup from your Ljubljana hotel and a drive into the Alps. Lake Bled arrives first—a 17th-century Baroque church sits on a small island in the middle of an emerald-green lake, with a medieval castle perched on the cliff above. The Pletna boat, a flat-bottomed wooden craft built by local craftsmen and found nowhere else, is the traditional way to cross to the island; you can ride one or simply walk the shore and take in the reflection of the mountains in the water. The castle itself stands 130 meters above the lake and opens to visitors for a separate fee.
Lake Bohinj, Slovenia's largest natural permanent lake, comes next. It sits deeper in the mountains than Bled and draws far fewer visitors—the water is calm, the forests thick, and the peaks reflected in the surface. You'll have time to walk the shoreline or simply sit with the quiet. The lake is ringed by the same national park that contains the next stop, so the landscape feels continuous and undisturbed.
Vintgar Gorge is the day's centerpiece. A 1.6-kilometer wooden walkway clings to the cliff face and leads you into a narrow canyon carved by the Radovna River. The water runs turquoise and cold, pooling in places deep enough to swim and rushing over rapids elsewhere. Waterfalls drop from the rock, and near the end of the gorge, the Šum waterfall—the largest river waterfall in Slovenia—thunders down from above. The walkway passes under a stone railway bridge built in 1906 and a dam that feeds a small hydroelectric plant, both woven into the landscape so long they feel part of it. The gorge entry fee is €15 if you choose to add it. Because the group stays under 9 people, you move through at your own pace without the crowd that can clog the boardwalk on larger tours.

What is the Pletna boat and can I ride it at Lake Bled?
The Pletna is a flat-bottomed wooden boat built by local craftsmen and found only at Lake Bled. It ferries visitors to the island church in the middle of the lake, though you can also walk the shore and view the island and castle from the water's edge without taking a boat ride.
How long is the walk through Vintgar Gorge?
The wooden boardwalk through Vintgar Gorge runs 1.6 kilometers along the canyon wall, leading to the Šum waterfall at the end. The walk is on a fixed path with railings, and you set your own pace through it.
Is the tour suitable if I'm not very fit?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. Most of the day is spent at the three lakes and walking the boardwalk at Vintgar Gorge, which is a gentle, flat path with handrails—not a hike into the mountains.
What's included in the price, and what costs extra?
Hotel pickup and drop-off, transport in an air-conditioned vehicle, and the guide are included. Vintgar Gorge entry (€15) and Bled Castle admission (€18) are optional and paid separately if you choose to add them.
How many people go on this tour?
The tour is capped at 8 travelers per departure, which keeps the group small enough to move at a relaxed pace and have space in the vehicle without feeling crowded.
What time does the tour start and end?
The tour takes 10 hours total, including drive time from Ljubljana. Your hotel pickup time will be confirmed when you book, and you'll be returned to your hotel at the end of the day.
