I didn’t really know what to expect from canyoning in Sušec, honestly. The word “canyoning” sounded a bit more extreme than what I usually sign up for, but my kids were buzzing about it and our guide Luka promised it was perfect for beginners. We met just outside Bovec—early enough that the morning air still had that cool, damp smell. Luka handed us wetsuits and helmets and made sure everyone’s harness fit right. I laughed at myself trying to wriggle into the suit; my daughter said I looked like a blue sausage (she wasn’t wrong).

The walk up took about half an hour, winding through trees with birds making more noise than I expected for that time of day. Luka explained how to use the ropes and where to put your feet on the rocks—he even demonstrated how not to land when you jump into a pool (which got a big laugh from my son). The first slide down the smooth stone was colder than I thought it’d be, but honestly kind of thrilling. There’s this moment where you just let go and trust the water will carry you. My heart was pounding but in a good way.

As we got deeper into the canyon, things got steeper—higher jumps, a little bit of rope work. Luka kept checking if anyone wanted to skip a jump or take the easier route around (I almost did once but ended up going for it). There’s something about hearing your own shout echo off those wet rock walls that makes you feel like a kid again. At one point, I caught this weird herbal smell from some crushed leaves by the water—no idea what plant it was but it stuck with me for some reason.

At the end, our van was waiting with dry clothes and towels. Pulling off those soggy wetsuits felt amazing—I could finally wiggle my toes again. We all crowded around Luka’s phone looking at the photos he’d taken (my mid-air face is apparently hilarious). Even now, I still think about that first cold splash and how proud my youngest looked after her first jump. It wasn’t what I expected—it was better.
