Paddle open water and mangrove channels with a guide who reads the tides and wildlife

Kayak from the southern end of Pulau Ubin westward to Ketam Island on a five-hour open-water paddle with an English-speaking adventure leader. You'll hug the coast, pass grey herons in their resting state, navigate mangrove channels that connect the two parts of Ketam Island, and watch for water monitor lizards and otters. The guide adjusts the pace to your fitness level. Equipment, accident insurance and a post-paddle rinse facility are included. Minimum two participants required. Children from age 7 are welcome.

The experience

You start at the southern end of Pulau Ubin and paddle westward into open water, heading toward Ketam Island just off the southwest coast. The route hugs the shoreline and crosses the strait between the two islands. Along the way you'll pass grey herons in their calm state and experience the serenity of paddling at sea, with the wind pushing you forward. This is not a sheltered lagoon paddle. You're on open water, and the guide will tailor the speed and intensity according to your physical limits.

Midway through the journey, you reach the mangrove channels that connect the two parts of Ketam Island. Your adventure leader points out the different mangrove species and their characteristics as you paddle through them. Water monitor lizards and otters sometimes appear in these shallows, though sightings are not guaranteed. The guide's job is to read the conditions and the wildlife, not to stage them. You'll get wet testing your personal floatation device before departure, and you'll paddle for the full five hours, so moderate physical fitness is expected.

After the paddle, you have access to lockers for valuables and a facility to rinse off. Accident insurance covers you during the programme. The ferry from Changi Point Ferry Terminal to Pulau Ubin costs approximately SGD 3 to SGD 5 each way and takes 20 to 30 minutes. Arrive 15 minutes before your start time to account for the wait. You'll need your passport details (full name, number, nationality and date of birth) at booking for the insurance paperwork.

Is this one for you? This five-hour paddle suits anyone with moderate fitness who wants to operate a kayak in open water rather than watch from a boat. The guide's role is to read the sea, the mangroves and the wildlife, not to narrate a sightseeing tour, so come ready to paddle and navigate, not to sit back.

Can I do this kayak if I've never paddled before?

Yes. No prerequisites are required, and the adventure leader will tailor the speed to your fitness level. You do need moderate physical fitness and must be comfortable getting wet to test your personal floatation device before departure.

What happens if the weather or sea conditions are rough on the day?

The guide adjusts the route and pace according to conditions and your limits. The adventure leader is experienced in reading open water and will make decisions to keep the group safe and matched to your ability.
