The Experience

We stepped up the little path in La Batie, past hibiscus and that thick green smell you only get in the tropics — honestly, I was still sweating from the drive. Our guide, Marie, waved us over to her shaded veranda where fabric was already stretched out on old wooden frames. She handed me a piece and grinned, “Pick your plants!” So I wandered into her garden (barefoot, because why not?) and tried to choose leaves that looked interesting — some were sticky, some soft like velvet. The Indian Ocean was just there, blue and endless if you turned your head the right way.

Marie showed us how to lay our leaves on the cloth for sun printing — she called it “printing with ancestors’ light.” It sounds poetic but it’s really about waiting for the sun to do its thing. While we waited, she brought out coconut water (straight from the nut) and these chewy little banana fritters. I tried asking about the Kreol names for some of the plants; Li laughed when I tried to say one in Seychellois Creole — probably butchered it completely. There was this slow rhythm to everything; even time felt softer somehow.

I kept touching my fabric just to feel how warm it got under the sun, and when we peeled off the leaves later, everyone let out this weirdly proud laugh at their own patterns. Mine looked a bit messy but also kind of beautiful? Anyway, I still think about that view from Marie’s porch — salt air, distant kids shouting somewhere down the hill. You get to take your textile home; mine still smells faintly of sea and dye. If you’re looking for a day trip in Seychelles that isn’t just beaches (not that there’s anything wrong with beaches), this sun printing class is something else.
