The experience

We stepped up the little path in La Batie, past hibiscus and that thick green smell you only get in the tropics: honestly, I was still sweating from the drive. Our guide, Marie, waved us over to her shaded veranda where fabric was already stretched out on old wooden frames. She handed me a piece and grinned, “Pick your plants!” So I wandered into her garden (barefoot, because why not?) and tried to choose leaves that looked interesting.
