The experience
Your guide picks you up at the airport or hotel and drives through New Belgrade, the modern commercial center, then crosses into Zemun: the Austro-Hungarian quarter known for its bakeries. You stop at a local café overlooking the Danube to rest and take in the river before heading into the old city.
The fortress sits on a hill where the Sava and Danube meet, and that geography is where Belgrade was born. From there the route moves through streets that developed under Ottoman rule, passing the National Parliament and City Hall, then the Museum of Yugoslav History. The Temple of St. Sava, the largest Orthodox church in the Balkans, comes next. The guide explains medieval Serbian history as you stand in front of it. The tour ends at Republic Square, where the National Theatre and National Museum face a sculpture of Prince Michael, and the guide walks you through 19th-century Serbian history before transport back to the airport.
The itinerary can shift based on your layover time, and you can request a break for food or a drink in Skadarlija, the bohemian quarter, if the schedule allows. Your guide speaks English or French and knows the timing of your flight, so the return is planned to get you back with time to spare.
