The Experience

"The lake, it changes color depending on the salt," our guide said as we pulled away from Dakar at 9am, and he wasn't exaggerating. Lac Rose sits about an hour and a half drive north, and the water really does shift from pale pink to deeper coral depending on the light and the minerals in it. The boat ride takes you out to see the harvesters at work — men and women in the shallows, raking salt crystals by hand the way it's been done for generations. You can photograph them, walk around the shore, get your hands in the salt if you want. It's one of those moments where you're standing in something genuinely unusual and the people doing the work are just there, doing it, which somehow makes it more real than any postcard.

After the boat tour and some free time to wander, you pick your second activity: either an ATV ride across the sand dunes or a jeep tour through the same landscape. Both are included in the price, so it's just what appeals to you that day. The ATV is faster, louder, more of a rush. The jeep is steadier, gives you more time to look around. Either way, you're moving through dunes that feel removed from the city you left behind. By the time you're done, you'll want the lunch that comes after — it's built into the day, not an add-on you have to negotiate.

The drive back to Dakar happens in the afternoon, and the operator drops you at your hotel or wherever you're staying.
