The experience
You arrive at Dunnet Beach ready to get in the water, and the first thing that happens is the wetsuit. A cosy one that keeps you warm in Scottish waters. Your instructor, a Scottish champion, fits you with a board matched to your level, then walks you over the dunes to the beach. The whole lesson is built around what you want: if you're here to have fun and feel what it's like to ride a wave, that's the focus. If you're already surfing and want to refine your technique, the coaching shifts to that instead.
Most of the two hours you're actually in the water. Your coaches stay close, calling out adjustments as you paddle out and catch waves: tips on your pop-up, your balance, how to read the swell. The water time is what sticks. The instruction happens while you're doing it, not before or after. Dunnet Beach is one of the UK's best-known breaks, so the conditions and the setting are part of what you're learning on.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the water temperature like at Dunnet Beach, and will the wetsuit keep me warm?
Scottish waters stay cold year-round, which is why the lesson includes a wetsuit. The suit is designed to keep you warm enough to stay comfortable for the full two hours in the water.
I've never surfed before, can I still book this lesson?
Yes. Total beginners are exactly who these lessons are built for. Your instructor will start with the basics on the beach, then take you into the water at a pace that matches your comfort level, focusing on the fundamentals of paddling and standing up on the board.
What happens if the waves are too small or too rough on the day of my lesson?
The instructor assesses conditions on the day and adjusts the lesson to what's actually happening at Dunnet Beach. If conditions aren't ideal for learning, they'll adapt the focus to what will help you most in those circumstances.
Do I need to bring anything, or is everything provided?
Everything is provided: wetsuit, surfboard, and all instruction. Bring a towel and a change of clothes for after the lesson. The instructor will have you suited up and ready to go when you arrive.
Can two people book this lesson together, or is it one-on-one?
The lesson is private and can include up to two people. If you're booking with a friend or family member, you'll both get instruction tailored to your individual abilities in the same two-hour session.
