The experience

I should probably admit right away: we almost missed our pickup because I thought the meeting point was on the other side of the street. Our guide, Jamie, just grinned and waved us over: no drama, just that Scottish shrug like he’s seen it all before. We rolled through Pitlochry for coffee (the scones smelled like warm butter and rain) and then up to Dalwhinnie Distillery. I tried their single malt. It burned in that way good whisky does, warming my throat while Jamie explained how they make it at over 1,000 feet above sea level. He told stories about clans and castles as we drove, sometimes pausing so we could just listen: wind rattling through pines or a sudden burst of birdsong near Rannoch Moor.
