The experience

The driver meets you 5 minutes before departure at your pre-agreed pickup location in Edinburgh and takes the wheel for the 90-minute drive to Stockbridge Market, a Roman town with an award-winning bakery where you can grab snacks. From there, the route heads into the Highlands proper: Glencoe, a steep-sided valley known for waterfalls and mountain trails, is the centerpiece stop. You set the rhythm here: linger at viewpoints, walk a trail if the mood strikes, or move on. Castle Stalker, a four-storey tower house on a tidal islet, comes next as a photo stop, then Oban, a coastal town where you have time to buy lunch, try seafood at the shore, or visit the distillery (tours run £22 to £35 per person if you want to add that on).

St Conan's Kirk, a lochside church in Lochawe, breaks up the drive before Inveraray Castle, the seat of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll. Entry costs £16.50 per person, but it's optional. You can photograph the grounds instead. Loch Lomond, Scotland's largest loch at 36.4 kilometers, is the final major stop for views and photos before the 3-hour return drive to Edinburgh, with bathroom and coffee breaks built in.
