The experience
You have a free afternoon in Riyadh and want to leave the city without spending the whole day planning. This activity starts with a 40-minute drive to the Red Sand Dunes, either from your hotel (private tour) or from Dunkin Cafe at Tijan Plaza (shared tour). Once you arrive, a licensed desert driver takes you across the dunes in a vehicle built for the terrain. This is dune bashing, not a slow scenic ride. The drive lasts about 30 minutes and covers the famous red sands the dunes are named for.
After the drive, you get 30 minutes to sandboard down the dunes or take photos. If you want more action, a quad bike ride costs 100 SAR per person and runs the same length. A camel ride is also available for 50 SAR per person if you want that moment. Then the pace shifts. You watch the sunset over the red sands with Arabic coffee, tea and snacks, followed by a full dinner as the light fades. The return drive takes 40 minutes back to your starting point or hotel.
The whole outing runs about 4 hours, though timing shifts slightly with the season and sunset. Bring sunglasses, comfortable shoes and cash for the optional quad bike and camel rides. A live guide speaks English and Arabic throughout. Restrooms are available on the way to the location.

Is this one for you?Book the private tour if you want hotel pickup and a dedicated vehicle for your group. The shared tour works better if you're traveling solo or with one other person and don't mind meeting at a central café. Both include the same dune driving, sunset and dinner. The difference is only the pickup and group size.
