experience

What’s the experience like?

We set out early, winding through sleepy villages and rolling fields for about an hour and a half before the road finally dipped into the forested hills near Varghis. The air smelled like wet leaves—sort of earthy, with a hint of woodsmoke from distant farmhouses. Our guide, Zsolt, chatted about local legends as we pulled up in a shiny Mercedes van (felt pretty fancy for a hiking trip).

The trail itself is easy to follow—mostly flat, with just enough roots and rocks to keep you watching your step. Right away, you notice how quiet it is. No crowds, just the sound of water rushing below and birds calling overhead. We crossed nine wooden bridges—some creaked underfoot—and stopped at three caves along the way. One cave had cool air pouring out even though it was warm outside; another echoed when I dropped a pebble inside. Zsolt pointed out wild hazelnut bushes and showed us where roe deer sometimes come down to drink.

I spotted flashes of trout in the river if I stood still long enough. There were tiny lizards sunning themselves on rocks, and once we heard something rustling in the brush—probably a wild boar, according to Zsolt (though I never saw it). The hike took us about three hours at an easy pace, with plenty of stops for photos or just to sit by the water. By the end, my boots were muddy but my head felt clear. Not many people seem to know about this place—honestly, that’s what makes it special.
