The Experience
“You ever ridden an Arabian before?” That’s what our guide, Hassan, asked as he handed me the reins. I just shook my head and tried not to look nervous. The horses were smaller than I expected—sleek, with these alert eyes—and the air out at Sealine had that dry, almost sweet scent you only get in the desert after sunrise. There was this quiet out there, except for the soft crunch of hooves on sand and Hassan humming something under his breath (he said it was an old folk song, but I couldn’t catch the words).
I’ll be honest—I thought forty minutes might feel long if you’re not used to horseback riding in Doha, but time slipped by weirdly fast. The horse seemed to know exactly where to go, following Hassan’s lead without fuss. At one point we stopped so he could point out some tracks—fox maybe?—and he told us how these horses are part of Qatari heritage. He even let me try saying “shukran” properly (I definitely didn’t nail it; he laughed anyway). The sun kept shifting on the dunes, making everything look different every few minutes.
Afterwards we sat down for tea—sweet and strong enough to wake you up if the ride hadn’t already—and just listened to the wind for a bit. It wasn’t fancy or anything, but that made it better somehow. I still think about how quiet it felt out there compared to Doha city noise. If you want a day trip from Doha that actually feels like you’re somewhere else entirely… well, this is it.
