The experience
I didn’t expect the city to just disappear so quickly behind us. One minute we were in Doha traffic, next it was all flat gold and sky. Our driver, Khalid, had this easy way about him, joking with my daughter about her tiny sunglasses while buckling her into the booster seat (which honestly made me relax right away). The air inside the 4x4 was cool but outside you could almost taste the heat through the windows.
The first time we hit a big dune I grabbed the seat, not gonna lie, my heart jumped. My son whooped. Khalid just grinned in the mirror and kept chatting about how these dunes shift every season. He stopped at what he called “the high point” for photos. The wind whipped around us, gritty but clean somehow, and I tried to get everyone to stand still for a picture but we mostly laughed at our hair blowing everywhere.
Sandboarding was next. I thought I’d be too old or clumsy for it (and maybe I was), but Khalid showed us how to balance and gave my youngest a gentle push down the slope. She squealed all the way down (sand in her shoes, sand in her teeth probably), but she wanted to go again before we even brushed off. There’s something about that light out there: everything looks sharper, even your own shadow feels taller.
