Shallow reef, turtles close enough to watch them feed

Snorkel a shallow coral reef in Vieques, Puerto Rico, where sea turtles, manta rays and tropical fish live meters from the surface. You provide your own ferry passage to the island; the operator handles transport from the meeting point to Punta Arenas, the snorkeling site, and supplies all gear, a live guide, photos and refreshments. The reef sits so close to shore that marine life appears within minutes of entry.

The Experience

The snorkeling starts at a ceiba tree meeting point on Vieques, then moves by transport to Punta Arenas—a 45-minute round trip. Once there, you get fitted with mask, fins, snorkel and lifeguard gear, and enter water shallow enough that the coral reef and its residents are visible without depth. The activity itself runs 45 to 60 minutes, but because the reef is so close to the beach, you see turtles, manta rays, tropical fish and corals from the moment you wade in. A live guide in English or Spanish stays with the group.

After you exit the water, the operator provides water and snacks to recover from the time underwater. Photos and videos taken during the snorkeling are included at no extra cost, so you leave with images of what you saw. The whole outing—transport, gear, guide, refreshment and media—takes about two hours from start to finish.

Is this one for you?The two-hour window means you can snorkel in the morning or afternoon and still have the rest of your day free on Vieques, but plan to reach the island by ferry before the meeting time, since the operator does not provide ferry passage or pickup from your accommodation.

Top questions

Do I need to know how to snorkel before I book this activity in Vieques?

No. The snorkeling site at Punta Arenas is shallow and designed for all levels, and the operator provides a live guide and all necessary equipment including masks, fins and snorkels. Suitable for all physical fitness levels, though not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.

How do I get to Vieques to join this snorkeling activity?

You must take the ferry to Vieques on your own; the operator does not arrange ferry passage. Once on the island, you reach the meeting point by your own transport, and the operator then handles the ride from there to Punta Arenas and back.

What marine life will I see while snorkeling at Punta Arenas?

The reef at Punta Arenas holds sea turtles, manta rays, tropical fish and vibrant corals in shallow water close to shore. Because the reef sits so near the beach, you encounter marine life within minutes of entering the water.

Are photos included, or do I need to bring my own camera?

Photos and videos taken during the snorkeling are included at no additional cost. The guide or operator captures images, so you don't need to manage a camera while in the water.

What gear is provided for this snorkeling activity?

The operator supplies masks, fins, snorkels and lifeguards as part of the package. You bring only a swimsuit and towel; all snorkeling equipment is included.
