Snorkeling in Vieques: Sea Turtles & Coral Reef
Shallow reef, turtles close enough to watch them feed
Snorkel a shallow coral reef in Vieques, Puerto Rico, where sea turtles, manta rays and tropical fish live meters from the surface. You provide your own ferry passage to the island; the operator handles transport from the meeting point to Punta Arenas, the snorkeling site, and supplies all gear, a live guide, photos and refreshments. The reef sits so close to shore that marine life appears within minutes of entry.
The Experience
The snorkeling starts at a ceiba tree meeting point on Vieques, then moves by transport to Punta Arenas—a 45-minute round trip. Once there, you get fitted with mask, fins, snorkel and lifeguard gear, and enter water shallow enough that the coral reef and its residents are visible without depth. The activity itself runs 45 to 60 minutes, but because the reef is so close to the beach, you see turtles, manta rays, tropical fish and corals from the moment you wade in. A live guide in English or Spanish stays with the group.
After you exit the water, the operator provides water and snacks to recover from the time underwater. Photos and videos taken during the snorkeling are included at no extra cost, so you leave with images of what you saw. The whole outing—transport, gear, guide, refreshment and media—takes about two hours from start to finish.
