The Experience

The tour starts at Alto de São Brás and moves through Tavira's core in a 100% electric tuk tuk. You pass the chapel of São Brás, the largest church in the city (Nossa Senhora do Carmo), and roll through the old prison area and past the Álvaro de Campos Municipal Library. The route takes in Ermida de São Sebastião, the squares of São Francisco and São José do Hospital, and Praça da República—the city center—where you can see the Roman Bridge of Tavira. The guide points out the Church of Santiago, the Convento da Graça, and the square of Santa Maria do Castelo as you move through the streets.

After the city streets, you stop at the Tavira salt flats and Ria Formosa to see the traditional salt ponds. Then the tuk tuk heads toward the coast and the old fishing village, passing Forte do Rato on the way. The final stop is the Tuna Museum, housed in the former tuna fishing trap (armação) where the village's main industry once operated. A 5-minute break is built into the route so you can step out and take in the surroundings.

The guide travels with you the whole way and speaks your choice of English, Spanish, Portuguese or French. Hotel pickup is arranged before you book, so the tour starts from where you're staying—no need to find your way to a meeting point or navigate the city first.
