Ilhéu de Villa Franca do Campo rises from the water as a natural monument, and the snorkeling happens in the waters that surround it—not on the protected island itself, but in the outer area where the volcanic geology and marine habitat are fully accessible. You meet at the store 30 minutes before the activity to receive a neoprene suit, mask and fins, and the guide briefs you on safety and what you'll encounter. Then you head out into the water with the guide alongside you.

The hour in the water takes you through crystal-clear conditions where volcanic rock formations create habitat for colorful fish, sea stars, crabs and other creatures. The guide shares information about what you're seeing and stays with the group throughout. If you want an extra push, you can rent a SeaScooter to cover more ground and move faster through the water.
