The Experience
I almost missed the turnoff for Nordeste—my phone lost signal, and the road felt like it was shrinking into mossy green. When I finally found the meeting spot, I was already laughing at myself. Our guide João didn’t mind. “Happens all the time,” he grinned, handing me a helmet that still smelled faintly of river water and neoprene. The rest of our little group was already there, lacing up canyoning boots and swapping nervous jokes about heights. I liked that nobody pretended to be an expert.
The hike up through the forest was steeper than I’d pictured (I’m not exactly a mountain goat), but João kept stopping to point out things—tiny yellow flowers growing from cracks, the way the air changed as we got closer to the stream bed. There was this moment when we first heard the water rushing below us—like static in your ears—and suddenly you could smell wet stone and something sharp, almost metallic. That’s when it hit me: this wasn’t just some tourist thing. It felt real, like we’d stumbled into someone else’s secret backyard.
Sliding down that first natural chute was pure chaos—I got water up my nose and probably looked ridiculous, but João cheered anyway. The big jump (I think it was 15 meters?) looked scarier from above than below; they said it’s optional but somehow I ended up doing it anyway. My knees were jelly after but honestly? That feeling when you break the surface and everyone’s shouting for you—I still think about it sometimes when I’m stuck behind my desk at home.
What’s included
Your day includes all canyoning equipment from helmet to boots (just tell them your shoe size), full safety instruction from local guides before each section of the stream, plus photos and videos of your adventure so you can relive every splash after you’re back home.
