The experience

Câmara de Lobos opens the day: a fishing village marked by steep cliffs and the distinctive wooden boats called Xavelhas that still work the cove. From there the route climbs to Cabo Girão, Europe's highest cliff at 580 meters, where a glass platform juts out over the drop and the coastal plain of Fajã do Cabo Girão spreads below. Ponta do Sol follows, known for its hours of sun, then Cascatas Gémeas: twin waterfalls that fall from the cliffs into the sea near Madalena do Mar.

The jeep then turns inland and climbs off-road from Arco da Calheta up to Paul da Serra, the island's only plateau, sitting at 1500 meters. On clear days you see both the south and north coasts from here. Fanal comes next, a centuries-old laurel forest that belongs to the indigenous Laurissilva woodland. The landscape here is marked by mist, green tones and a winter lagoon formed in an ancient crater. Ribeira da Janela village sits where the island's longest river meets the sea, framed by rock islets with a natural window carved into one.

Porto Moniz is the main stop: two hours to swim in the natural pools formed by volcanic rock and eat lunch. Seixal beach, with its black sand and green cliffs, offers a second swim before the drive back to Funchal. The guide is flexible: if weather turns, they'll reroute to find sun and clear skies. The jeep is yours alone, not shared with other groups, and pickup from your Funchal hotel is included.
