The experience
The route climbs from the coast into Madeira's interior, passing through working farmland most visitors miss. Banana fields and cherry and apple trees line the lower slopes. Higher up, the Eucalyptus forest of Quinta Grande thickens around you. The road narrows as you enter the vineyard country of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, which produces more than half the island's wine. The terraces themselves (cut into steep hillsides and built to hold the soil) show how farming works on an island with no flat land.
Cabo Girão sits at 580 meters, the highest sea cliff in Europe. The stop there is brief but the scale is real: the cliff drops straight down to the ocean, and on clear days the view runs across open water to the horizon. After this, you pull into a local bar (the kind of place where residents go, not tourists), and order the regional drinks and cakes the guide recommends. The final stop is a viewpoint over the nuns valley, a quieter moment before heading back down.
The tour runs 3 to 4 hours total. You travel in a private vehicle with your own guide, so the pace is yours and the stops stretch as long as you want them to. The guide speaks your language and knows the roads and the people. Pickup from your hotel or accommodation is part of the booking.

Is this one for you?Book the 4x4 option if the roads to the viewpoints matter to you. The vehicle handles the steep mountain terrain and the narrow vineyard tracks that a regular car cannot reach. Choose the group size that matches your party: the vehicle capacity determines how many people travel together, and smaller groups move faster through the stops.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, French, German and Portuguese.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is Cabo Girão and why does this tour stop there?
Cabo Girão is a sea cliff on Madeira's south coast that rises 580 meters straight up from the ocean: the highest in Europe. The tour includes a stop at the viewpoint so you can stand at the edge and see across the Atlantic. On clear days the view extends far out to sea.
What are the vineyards of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos like?
Estreito produces more than half of Madeira's wine and covers steep hillsides in terraced rows. The tour passes through the vineyard area so you see how the terraces are built and maintained on land too steep to farm any other way.
Does the tour include food or drinks?
The tour stops at a local bar where you can order regional drinks and cakes. These are not included in the price, so you pay for what you order. The guide will tell you what is typical to try.
How many people can book this tour together?
You can book a private tour for up to 2, 6, or 8 people depending on which option you choose at checkout. Each group travels in its own vehicle with a private guide.
Does pickup from my hotel cost extra?
Pickup is included in the tour price, so your guide will collect you from your accommodation and return you there at the end.
