The Experience

The walk starts at the Canon miradour and climbs one of the nine kilometers of tracks on Pico Castelo, following stone terraces and wood paths up to the picnic area at the top. You pause there to rest, drink and take photographs before beginning the descent toward Pico do Facho on a different path. The guide points out the tree planting and stabilization work done over decades on what was once bare rock, and explains the farming terraces still visible across the slopes even though nobody has lived or farmed here for years.

The second half circles Pico do Facho on a much gentler route, where water erosion has sculpted the soft, almost sandy rock into dramatic formations. The terrain changes constantly—wooded trails open into fields, views shift with each turn, and the seasonal changes are stark: rich greens in winter, sandy browns in summer. On clear days, Madeira itself floats on the horizon beyond the beach. The guide handles the route and timing; you walk at the pace that suits you.
