You know that feeling when you’re not sure what to expect, but you walk in anyway? That’s how it started at Casa do Fado São João Novo. The entrance is tucked under these heavy old stones, right below the sacristy of the church. I nearly missed it, honestly. There was this faint smell of wax and something earthy, maybe from centuries of prayers or just the dampness clinging to the walls. Our local host greeted us with a grin and handed over a glass of Port (I tried to sip slowly, but it’s sweet and goes down easy). The river Douro was just visible through one arched window, blue-grey in the dusk.
The room isn’t big. It almost feels like someone’s living room if their living room had perfect acoustics and faded religious paintings overhead. When the musicians started tuning up, everyone went quiet at once. I didn’t know much about fado before, but when the singer opened her mouth… well, my chest actually tightened a bit.
