The experience

The tour starts at a meeting point with free parking near Portimão, then boards a boat to sail down the Arade River. On the way out, you pass the Portimão Museum and the ruins of the São Francisco Monastery, destroyed in the 1755 earthquake: the largest ever recorded in Europe. The river route also shows a traditional fisherman's village and the Castle of São João do Arade before the boat exits into open water at Portimão Marina.

Once in the Atlantic, the search for dolphins, whales and sea birds begins. A biologist guide and expert sea captain lead the expedition, explaining the marine species you encounter and how they fit into the ocean's ecosystem. The captain navigates to find dolphins. Sometimes that means traveling far into open water, so dress in layers and bring a windbreaker. Bring a camera: encounters with marine mammals happen close enough to photograph. Bottled water is included, and life jackets are provided.

This is a working ocean tour, not a scenic cruise. The boat may spend time searching, and what you see depends on where the animals are that day. The small-group, family-run setup means no crowds and a pace set by wildlife sightings rather than a fixed schedule. Guides offer local tips on restaurants and activities in the area once you're back on shore.

What’s included

  • Life jackets and bottled water.
  • free car park at the meeting point.
  • insurance.
  • expert biologist guide and sea captain with knowledge of Algarve marine species and local attractions.
