Pico Island Whale and Dolphin Watching 3-Hour Tour
Marine biologists, traditional lookout towers, and three hours tracking cetaceans in the waters where Azorean whalers once hunted
A 3-hour whale and dolphin watching activity in Pico Island's waters, led by marine biologists aboard a small group boat that uses traditional vigia lookout towers and hydrophones to locate cetaceans. The operator, Espaço Talassa, has worked these waters since 1989, founded by a French sailor and a former whaling family. You receive a pre-departure briefing on species and sea conditions, real-time identification and behavior commentary while at sea, a complimentary drink on return, and free access to the Espaço Talassa library. The activity is not suitable for pregnant people, those with serious cardiac or spinal conditions, or people with other grave health issues.

The experience
Espaço Talassa locates whales and dolphins using the same vigia lookout towers that guided Azorean whalers for centuries: one monitor watches the horizon from Vigia da Queimada on shore while you're on the water, radioing sightings to the boat. Your marine biologist explains what you observe: species identification, behavior, the history of these waters. Onboard hydrophones let you listen to the animals themselves. This is built on unhurried time at sea and genuine respect for the creatures, not a performance.
The morning starts with a briefing on which cetaceans you might encounter and current conditions. Once at sea, the guide walks you through everything: what species you're watching, how they move, why they're here. The vigia ashore stays in constant contact, directing the boat toward sightings. On the return, you get a complimentary drink and a debrief with the crew, and afterward you have free access to the Espaço Talassa library to read more about the animals you saw.
You'll wear a waterproof jacket and life vest provided. The activity runs three hours and suits all fitness levels. A guide speaks English, Portuguese, French, or German depending on the departure. Liability insurance and the cetacean observation permit are included, as is the environment tax required to operate in these waters.

Is this one for you?Small groups keep the boat unhurried and the experience focused on the animals rather than the crowd, which suits anyone who wants genuine observation over a performance. If you're comfortable on open water and want to understand what you're seeing rather than simply spot it, this activity's marine biologist guide and traditional vigia method deliver that depth.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, French, German and Portuguese.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What cetaceans am I likely to see in Pico waters?
Pico's waters host sperm whales, Bryde's whales, fin whales, and several dolphin species including spotted dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. The marine biologist on board will identify what you encounter and explain their behavior and seasonal patterns in these waters.
How does the vigia lookout tower help find the whales?
Vigia da Queimada is a traditional land-based lookout tower that has been used for centuries to spot cetaceans. A monitor stationed there watches the horizon and radios sightings to the boat in real time, the same method Azorean whalers relied on before the company was founded.
What happens if we don't see whales or dolphins?
The marine biologist will still guide you through the ocean, its currents, and the species that inhabit these waters. Sightings depend on weather, season, and where the animals are on any given day. The activity is about encountering nature as it is, not guaranteeing a specific outcome.
What should I bring or wear for the three-hour trip?
Waterproof jackets and life vests are provided. Wear layers and bring warm or waterproof pants if you have them, as sea conditions can be cool and wet. The boat operates in open water, so dress for wind and spray.
Can I visit the Espaço Talassa library after the activity?
Yes, free access to the library is included with your booking. You can visit afterward to read about the cetacean species and the history of whaling in the Azores that shaped the company's founding.
