Madeira Surfing Lessons: Beginner-Friendly Waves & Certified Coaches
Volcanic Sand & Your First Wave: Surfing Madeira's North Coast
You arrive at a Madeira beach, spend 15–30 minutes learning theory and warming up on shore, then paddle out for 90 minutes of guided practice on volcanic sand. Your certified coach provides the board, wetsuit, leash and insurance; the beach location shifts based on daily swell conditions. Pick-up from central Madeira costs 20 euros extra if you need it.
Step-by-step itinerary
Surf lessons on Madeira beaches
- Meet at surf school base
- Attend theoretical session and warm-up
- Practice surfing in water for 1.5 hours
- Use provided surfboard, wetsuit, and leash
- Optional pick-up and drop-off service
The Experience
The beach spreads out in front of you—black volcanic sand, the Atlantic rolling in steady. Your instructor hands you a board, checks your wetsuit fit, and walks you through the basics on shore for about twenty minutes. Then you're in the water for an hour and a half, paddling out when the timing feels right, feeling the board shift under you as a wave builds. The lesson happens on one of three beaches depending on conditions that day—north-eastern, south-eastern, or the north coast—and the instructors from Aroundfreedom Surf School read the swell and pick the spot that works best for your level.
What makes this different from a lot of beginner surf lessons is that everything is already sorted. You show up, and the certified coach (trained through the Portuguese Surf Federation) has your board, your 3/2mm wetsuit, your leash, and your insurance all ready. No renting separately, no signing forms at three different places. The school runs small groups, which means the instructor actually watches you, corrects your pop-up, tells you when to paddle harder. If you need pick-up from near the CR7 museum on Avenida Sá Carneiro—about an hour before the lesson starts—that's 20 euros per person and they'll bring you back after. Otherwise you meet them at the school base.
One thing to know: the schedule can shift if the swell changes. They'll confirm the new time the day before via WhatsApp or phone, so you're not showing up to find the beach closed or the conditions unsafe. Bring a swimsuit under the wetsuit, a towel, sunscreen, a hat, shoes that grip wet sand, water, and something light to eat. The activity itself is physical—you're paddling, balancing, getting up and down—but the instructors work with all levels, from people who've never touched a board to those who've surfed before and want to refine their technique.
What’s included
- Your lesson includes a certified surf coach from the Portuguese Surf Federation, a surfboard and leash, a full 3/2mm wetsuit, insurance coverage, and 1.5 hours of guided practice in the water.
- The school also provides a 15–30 minute theory session and warm-up on the beach before you paddle out.
- If you book pick-up, the driver collects you from Avenida Sá Carneiro near the CR7 museum about an hour before the lesson and returns you afterward.
