Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Snorkelling trip at Ponta de São Lourenço

  • Briefing with snorkel guide
  • Learn about geology and biodiversity
  • Boat tour along Madeira coasts
  • Stop at snorkeling spots
  • Snorkel with expert guide
  • Return to Marina of Funchal

We pushed off from the Marina of Quinta do Lorde just as the sun started poking through some leftover morning clouds. The boat ride out to Ponta de São Lourenço felt quick — maybe because I was busy trying to catch every bit of coastline, those sharp cliffs and weird volcanic shapes. Our guide, Rui, handed out masks and fins, cracking a joke about how everyone looks ridiculous in snorkel gear (he’s not wrong). There was this salty breeze that clung to everything, even my eyebrows.

Before we got in, Rui gave us a rundown about the protected area — apparently these waters are home to more fish than I’d ever spot back home. He pointed out a patch of sea where the light hit just right and you could see flashes of silver below. When I slipped into the water it was cooler than I expected, but not cold enough to make me regret it. Breathing through the snorkel always feels strange at first; I forgot how loud my own bubbles sound underwater. Saw some parrotfish nibbling away at rocks and a couple of shy wrasse darting past — honestly, I lost track of time just floating there.

I tried asking Rui what one of the blue-and-yellow fish was called — “peixe-rei,” he said, then laughed when I tried repeating it (I definitely butchered it). At one point I caught myself just drifting, listening to muffled voices from above and feeling that weird calm you only get underwater. The boat rocked gently nearby and someone on deck waved down at us with a sandwich in hand — made me realize how hungry I was getting.

We climbed back aboard after maybe two hours (could’ve been less or more, who knows when you’re in the water). My hair felt stiff with salt and my skin sticky from sunblock and sea spray. On the way back to shore, Rui told us a bit about how this part of Madeira is protected for its biodiversity — he seemed genuinely proud. I still think about that quiet moment underwater when everything else faded out except for sunlight flickering over sand.
