The Experience

We pushed off from the Marina of Quinta do Lorde just as the sun started poking through some leftover morning clouds. The boat ride out to Ponta de São Lourenço felt quick — maybe because I was busy trying to catch every bit of coastline, those sharp cliffs and weird volcanic shapes. Our guide, Rui, handed out masks and fins, cracking a joke about how everyone looks ridiculous in snorkel gear (he’s not wrong). There was this salty breeze that clung to everything, even my eyebrows.

Before we got in, Rui gave us a rundown about the protected area — apparently these waters are home to more fish than I’d ever spot back home. He pointed out a patch of sea where the light hit just right and you could see flashes of silver below. We climbed back aboard after maybe two hours (could’ve been less or more, who knows when you’re in the water). My hair felt stiff with salt and my skin sticky from sunblock and sea spray.
