The Experience

So we’re bumping along in this minibus out of Funchal, and I’m still half-awake, clutching my coffee. The driver—can’t remember his name now, but he had that quiet Madeiran humor—points out a cloud that looks like a whale. Someone in the back laughs. We pass Machico and the landscape gets sharper, drier, more dramatic. When we finally hop out at the start of the Ponta de São Lourenço trail, there’s this salty wind that hits you right away—like someone left the ocean door wide open.

I didn’t expect it to feel so…raw? It’s not the lush green Madeira you see on postcards. The path is rocky underfoot, reddish-brown cliffs dropping straight into blue water on both sides. Every so often you catch the cries of seagulls—dozens of them circling overhead or perched on ledges. Our group spreads out along the trail; some people power ahead, but I keep stopping to watch tiny lizards dart between stones or to just stare at those north-south views. There’s a moment where all you hear is wind and your own breath—no traffic, no city noise. I kind of needed that.

After a couple hours (maybe less if you don’t dawdle like me), there’s this little house at Cais do Sardinha. Some folks go for a swim—I just sat on a rock with my shoes off, letting my feet dry in the sun while eating an orange I’d packed. The guide had said something about rare birds nesting nearby; I think I spotted one but honestly couldn’t say for sure (I’m no expert). The sea air makes everything taste better though.

The van picks us up again after about three and a half hours—give or take—and everyone’s got that tired-but-happy look. My legs were wobbly but in a good way. On the drive back toward Garajau and Caniço, someone shares cookies they bought in Funchal earlier (thanks Ana!). That coastline stays with you longer than you expect—it pops up in your mind when you least expect it.
