25 Fontes & Risco Levada self-guided hike from Funchal
Walk two of Madeira's most famous levadas without a guide steering the pace
A self-guided hike from Funchal to Rabaçal in Madeira covers the 25 Fontes and Risco Levada trails over 5 hours and 10 km, with hotel pickup and drop-off included. You receive a map and hike instructions before setting out, and the early morning timing means you'll have the paths mostly to yourself during the first hours. The hike climbs between 1000 and 1300 meters elevation; moderate fitness is required.
The Experience
You're picked up from your Funchal accommodation in a shared van (up to 8 guests) and driven roughly 1.5 hours to the Rabaçal parking lot. The hosts walk you through the route on a map, explain what to expect on each trail, and give you a schedule before you head out. Then the day is yours — you walk both the 25 Fontes and Risco Levada paths in whatever order and at whatever speed suits you, with 5 hours to complete both before the van returns to collect you at the same parking lot.
The 25 Fontes trail descends through a tunnel carved into the mountainside and opens onto a natural amphitheater where water cascades down the cliff face from dozens of springs. The Risco Levada runs along a narrow water channel cut into the rock, with views across the valley. Together they cover 10 km and climb through elevations between 1000 and 1300 meters. You finish at the Casa do Rabaçal café, where the van picks you up for the 1.5-hour drive back to Funchal. The early start means you'll walk the first hours with few other hikers on the path.
Bring water and snacks — neither is included. The trails are rocky and exposed in places, so sturdy hiking boots matter. The van is air-conditioned for the transfer, and the map you receive before departure stays with you the whole way. If you're staying outside central Funchal, Câmara de Lobos, or Caniço, pickup may not be available.

How long does it take to hike both the 25 Fontes and Risco Levada trails?
You have 5 hours to walk both trails, covering 10 km total with elevation changes between 1000 and 1300 meters. The pace is entirely up to you — the time allows for stops and photos without rushing.
What's included in the hike and what do I need to bring?
The package includes hotel pickup and drop-off, an air-conditioned van transfer, a map, and hike instructions before you start. You'll need to bring water, snacks, and sturdy hiking boots; lunch and breakfast are not provided, though the Casa do Rabaçal café is at the end of the route.
Why does this hike start so early in the morning?
The early departure and arrival at Rabaçal during the first hours means you'll walk the 25 Fontes and Risco Levada paths with far fewer other hikers, giving you a quieter experience on two of Madeira's most popular trails.
What's the difference between the 25 Fontes and Risco Levada trails?
25 Fontes descends through a tunnel and opens onto a natural amphitheater where water cascades from dozens of springs down the cliff. Risco Levada runs along a narrow water channel carved into the rock with valley views. Both are part of Madeira's famous levada system.
Do I need a guide, or am I really walking on my own?
This is self-guided — you receive a map and instructions before you start, then walk at your own pace and rhythm. There's no guide accompanying you on the trail; you choose when to stop, how fast to go, and which path to walk first.
What fitness level do I need for this hike?
You should have at least moderate physical fitness. The hike covers 10 km with elevation changes between 1000 and 1300 meters, and the trails include rocky sections and some exposure. It's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or if you're pregnant.
