Three waterfalls and a working tea plantation on one trail through the north coast forest

A full-day guided hike through Lomba de São Pedro on São Miguel island's north coast, with pickup included. The trail descends past hydrangeas to Cascata do Homem, winds through a cryptomeria forest past two more waterfalls and an old flour mill, then climbs back through springs and local villages. After a picnic lunch, you visit Gorreana Tea Plantation, Europe's oldest in production, and end at Santa Iria viewpoint. Trekking poles and an accredited guide in English or Portuguese are provided. The hike suits moderate fitness levels and children from age 8 onward.

The experience

Lomba de São Pedro sits on the north coast of São Miguel, where the trail begins with a steep descent past hydrangeas and reaches Cascata do Homem within the first stretch. The route follows water flows downward through a cryptomeria forest, passing the ruins of Moinho do Félix (an old mill that once ground flour), and arrives at Palma da Mão viewpoint overlooking Cascata do Teófilo. From there, the path continues to Cascata da Gruta and Poço da Truta before climbing back up through springs and green areas, crossing the parish past fountains and local life.

Midway through the day, you stop for a picnic lunch, then head to Gorreana Tea Plantation and Factory, the oldest tea plantation still in production anywhere in Europe. A guide leads a short tour of the working plantation and you can drink a cup of tea on-site. The day ends at Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões, where a waterfall drops into a natural pool and you can order a hot or cold drink, followed by a stop at Santa Iria viewpoint to look back across the coast.

Pickup and drop-off from your accommodation are included, along with trekking poles, insurance and an accredited guide who speaks English or Portuguese. The full day runs about eight hours. Weather and group fitness may shift the order of stops, but the core route (three named waterfalls, the tea plantation visit, and the final viewpoint) stays the same.
