Paint Your Own Portuguese Tile in Azeitão, Then See Centuries of Them

You travel south of Lisbon to a working tile studio in Azeitão, where you learn ceramic techniques from an expert artisan and paint your own tile to take home; you have free time for lunch by the waterfront; and the afternoon includes a replacement cultural experience focused on Portuguese tiles (the National Tile Museum is closed until June 2026). Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't arrange transport.

8h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Drive to Azeitão region
  • See tile examples en route
  • Cross 25th of April Bridge
  • Learn tile making at workshop
  • Paint your own tile
  • Free time at waterfront for lunch
  • Visit National Tile Museum

The Experience

So you're standing in a tile studio south of Lisbon, hands covered in slip, trying not to laugh at how much you're concentrating on something that's supposed to be relaxing. That's the Azulejos de Azeitão workshop, and it's where the morning of this Lisbon tiles and tales experience actually starts — not with a lecture, but with clay. Your guide picks you up from your hotel and drives you across the 25th of April Bridge, which alone is worth the ride; the views east and west show you almost the entire city from up there. Then you're in Azeitão, learning how tiles are made from someone who's been doing it for years, and then you get to make one yourself. You paint it, they fire it, and you can ship it home or pick it up before you leave.

The afternoon used to be the National Tile Museum, but it's closed for refurbishing until June 2026, so the tour swaps in another experience with tiles instead — your guide will tell you what that is when you book, since it changes. Either way, there's free time at the waterfront in between, so you're not rushed from one thing to the next. You eat lunch when you want, walk around, sit by the water. The whole day is about eight hours, and it includes the pickup, the guide, water in the van, and whatever you make in the workshop.

This isn't a tour where you're watching someone else work. You're actually doing it, which means you'll remember it differently than if you'd just looked at old tiles in a museum. And you get something physical to take with you — a tile you painted yourself, in a place that's been making them the same way for centuries.

What’s included

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off.
  • local guide for the full day.
  • instruction and materials for the tile workshop.
  • bottled water.
  • WiFi in the van.
  • free time for lunch at the waterfront.
  • the afternoon tiles-focused experience (details confirmed at booking since the National Tile Museum is closed until June 2026).
