The experience
This hike covers 17km over six to seven hours, which is longer and steeper than the popular 25 Fountains walk offered by larger tour operators. The route follows Levada trails (narrow paths that run alongside the water channels built centuries ago to carry water across the island), and cuts through sections of native Laurisilva forest. You'll move through terrain most day-trippers skip, which means fewer crowds and a real sense of the landscape rather than a highlight reel.
The walk builds toward Lagoa do Vento, a waterfall with a pool deep enough for swimming if you bring a change of clothes. Before that, you'll traverse the levada part of Alecriom and pass through the vegetation that makes this forest distinct from anywhere else on the island. A certified mountain guide leads the group, speaking English, Spanish, Portuguese or French, and keeps the pace steady for hikers with moderate fitness. The maximum group size is eight people, so you're never herded through the landscape.
Hotel pickup is included from Caniço or Funchal, or you can arrange a meeting point near the port. Port pickup itself carries a small extra fee. Bring comfortable hiking shoes, layers for changing mountain weather, and pack your own food and water. The guide will tell you what to expect for the day. The walk operates in all weather, so come prepared for sun and cold at altitude.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Levada and why does the walk follow it?
The Levada is a narrow water channel built into the mountainside centuries ago to transport water across Madeira's steep terrain. Walking the Levada means you stay on a path that runs alongside this channel, moving through forest and across slopes that would be impassable otherwise. It's the reason the hike reaches remote waterfalls and forest sections most visitors never see.
Can I swim at Lagoa do Vento waterfall?
Yes, Lagoa do Vento has a pool where swimming is possible, so bring a change of clothes and a towel if you want to go in. The water is cold, fed by the mountain, so be prepared for that.
How does this hike compare to the standard 25 Fountains walk?
This route covers 17km and is harder than the standard 25 Fountains tour run by larger companies. It spends more time in the Laurisilva forest and on Levada trails, covers more ground, and keeps groups small: a maximum of eight people instead of the larger groups typical elsewhere.
What should I bring for a six to seven hour hike in the mountains?
Bring comfortable hiking shoes, layers because weather changes at altitude, sunscreen, and pack your own food and water for the day. The guide recommends a picnic rather than relying on stops along the way, so plan accordingly.
Is this walk suitable for someone with moderate fitness?
Yes, the walk is designed for hikers with at least a moderate level of fitness. The 17km distance and challenging terrain mean you'll be moving steadily for most of the day, so be honest about your fitness level before booking. Children are welcome from age ten onward.
