Sea caves and tunnels open only when you approach them by boat.

Snorkel the Ponta da Piedade coastline near Lagos aboard a small, maneuverable boat with a professional skipper, snorkeling equipment and a sheltered swimming stop included. The 1.5-hour journey takes you through natural caves and tunnels carved into the Algarve's golden cliffs, accessible only by sea, with time to dive into the Atlantic in calm waters. Groups stay under 10 people, and children can join from age 6.

The Experience

You board at Marina de Lagos and head out on a boat built small enough to slip into the rock formations that line the coast. The skipper navigates through natural caves and tunnels—passages so narrow and low that a larger vessel could never fit—while pointing out the geology and history written into the stone. The golden cliffs rise around you, and the water stays clear enough to see the seafloor as you move through hidden beaches only reachable by water.

Partway through, the boat stops in a sheltered area where you put on snorkeling gear and slip into the Atlantic. The water is cold enough to wake you up and calm enough that you can stay down and look around. This is where the ride becomes a dive—you're not watching the landscape anymore, you're inside it. The stop lasts as long as the group needs, and you can climb back aboard whenever you're ready.

The whole outing runs 1.5 hours from start to finish. Safety gear is included, and the skipper stays with the group the entire time. Children from age 6 can come along, though the boat does move and the water entry requires some comfort in the sea.

What’s included

  • Snorkeling equipment and safety gear.

Top questions

What exactly is Ponta da Piedade and why is it only reachable by boat?

Ponta da Piedade is a stretch of the Algarve coast defined by golden cliffs, sea caves and tunnels carved into the rock. The caves and the narrow passages between the formations are only wide and deep enough for small boats to pass through, which is why you need to be on the water to see them—no cliff-top path or beach walk reaches them.

Do I need snorkeling experience to join, or is this for beginners too?

The tour welcomes snorkelers of all levels. Snorkeling equipment is provided, and the swimming stop happens in a sheltered, calm area where you can take your time getting comfortable in the water. You do need at least a moderate level of physical fitness to board and move around the boat safely.

How cold is the water, and how long do you actually spend in it?

The Atlantic near Lagos stays cool year-round; expect water temperature in the low to mid 60s Fahrenheit depending on the season. The swimming stop lasts as long as the group is comfortable, typically 20 to 30 minutes, and you can exit the water whenever you're ready—there's no fixed time in the water.

What's included in the price, and what do I need to bring?

Snorkeling equipment, safety gear, the boat ride and the skipper's guidance are all included. Bring a swimsuit, a towel, sunscreen and water. The boat is small and exposed, so sun protection matters.

Can children come on this snorkeling trip?

Children can join from age 6 onward. They'll need to be comfortable on a moving boat and in the water, and they should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness to manage the boarding and the conditions.
