The experience

"You'll see things from the water that nobody on the beach ever will," our captain said as we cast off from Lagos Marina, and he wasn't exaggerating. The catamaran cuts through the Atlantic toward Ponta da Piedade first. Those 20-meter golden cliffs rise up like something carved by hand, arches and caves folded into the rock face, turquoise water so clear you can see the bottom. The boat slows down, and you have time to actually look, to swim if you want, to take photos that don't need a filter because the light is doing all the work.

What makes this different from the crowded tour boats is the size: only up to 12 people on the catamaran, which means no jostling for a spot at the rail and no shouting over an amplified microphone.
