The Experience

"You'll see things from the water that nobody on the beach ever will," our captain said as we cast off from Lagos Marina, and he wasn't exaggerating. The catamaran cuts through the Atlantic toward Ponta da Piedade first—those 20-meter golden cliffs rise up like something carved by hand, arches and caves folded into the rock face, turquoise water so clear you can see the bottom. The boat slows down, and you have time to actually look, to swim if you want, to take photos that don't need a filter because the light is doing all the work.

What makes this different from the crowded tour boats is the size—only up to 12 people on the catamaran, which means no jostling for a spot at the rail and no shouting over an amplified microphone. The crew knows the coast well enough to adjust the route depending on what you want to see and how the sea is running that day. You're not locked into a fixed itinerary; if you want an extra swim stop or more time inside one of the caves, they work with that. Benagil Cave itself—the big one, the famous one with the natural skylight cutting down into the dome—hits different when you're floating inside it rather than watching from a crowded beach access point. The echo, the scale, the way the light falls through that opening in the roof.

The boat stops at Praia da Marinha on the way back, and by then you've already seen the Alfanzina Lighthouse from the water, drifted past Boneca's Cave, and probably swum in at least two places.
