The experience
The tour runs in a rugged 4x4 with the roof off in summer months, climbing to viewpoints across the island. Your guide is an island insider who navigates the trails intimately and shares folklore and history you won't find in guidebooks. The route typically includes Monte Brasil, an extinct volcano ringed by 4 kilometres of fortress walls and offering panoramic views of Angra do Heroísmo; a stop for locally sourced coffee from nearby plantations; and tastings at a cheese producer where the oldest cheese on Terceira is made. An ethnographic house and working windmill show how islanders used mills to produce flour and the tools they relied on for daily life.
The landscape shifts between cultural landmarks and natural reserves. Lagoa das Patas, a forest reserve in the island's interior, centres on an artificial lake fed by water from the Serra de Santa Bárbara range, surrounded by azaleas, hydrangeas and other vegetation. The volcanic descent takes you roughly 100 metres down into a volcanic cavity: a natural chamber with unique geology and fauna. A fumarolic field, a secondary volcanic site covering about 14 hectares, shows where volcanic gases still escape at temperatures reaching 95°C at the surface. Note that Algar do Carvão and its visitor centre are currently closed for construction work with no confirmed reopening date.
You'll wear waterproof jackets and carry walking sticks provided by the operator, along with an island map and an SOS kit. The minimum age is 12. Pickup is included in the price. Lunch at a local restaurant is optional and costs 35 euros per adult if you choose to add it. The tour is not wheelchair accessible, and it is not recommended for travellers with spinal injuries.
