The experience

You need to have ridden before to book this one: the operator requires it for safety and liability reasons. Once you confirm your experience level and sign the liability agreement, you pick your route: the beach ride threads through a pine forest along a fossil-topped path that opens onto Costa de Caparica's sand; the mountain option takes you through Arrábida Louro's terrain; or you can spend the full two hours in the ring working on technique with the guide. A small group of no more than six keeps the pace manageable and the attention personal.

The beach and mountain rides include a Portuguese-speaking guide who sets the tempo based on each rider's comfort and the horses' readiness: galloping or cantering is not guaranteed and depends on conditions and safety clearance on the day. You'll need to come dressed for outdoor riding, wear closed shoes (no slippers), and bring or accept a helmet from their stock of sizes. They provide water and can advise on sun protection if you have sensitive skin. One variant adds a private photo session to the beach route if you want images of the ride.

A short section of the mountain route involves a steep, narrow climb between trees, though alternative paths exist if that doesn't suit you. The whole experience rests on what the operator calls natural horsemanship (mutual respect between horse and rider), so expect a working partnership, not a passive tour.
