The Experience

What makes these stones worth the walk? The Menir of Almendres stands alone on a path through cork trees, a single stone planted around 5500 to 3000 BC. The walk down to it takes 5 to 10 minutes, though the path is rough underfoot. From there, the tour continues by van through the Almendres property to the Cromlech—the circular stone monument that earned the name Stonehenge of Portugal. The road has been cut by the local municipality, so you'll park and walk about 1.25 kilometers (0.77 miles) to reach the stones themselves.

At each site, the archaeologist walks you through what the Neolithic period meant: when agriculture first emerged, when communities began to gather and build, what these arrangements of stone might have signified. You're not reading a plaque; someone who studies this era is standing beside you, answering what the stones were for and why they were placed this way. The walk to the Cromlech takes roughly 25 minutes each way, and you'll spend time at the site itself before heading back to the van.

On the return to Évora, there's a stop at the Centro Interpretativo dos Almendres (the gift shop and interpretation center) if it's open, giving you time to look around. The whole outing—drive, walks, time at the monuments, and the return journey—runs between two and four hours depending on the season and how much time you spend at each site.
